North hesitated when he saw Dylan’s name flash on his cell phone’s screen. He wasn’t sure he could take more bad news after Win had gathered everyone to tell them that no, they still couldn’t leave the warehouse, and that no, he still didn’t have news about what the fuck was happening.

“Are you going to answer that?”

North looked up to find Milo smiling down at him from behind the couch. He tilted his head back and puckered his lips, staying like that until Milo gave in and bent down to kiss him. Someone hooted, and North flipped them the bird without looking to see who it was.

Milo straightened. “Well? Are you going to answer your phone?”

It was still ringing, but North didn’t let himself hope it was because Dylan had good news. He couldn’t, not again. “I guess.”

North swiped his thumb across the screen as he rose. “Hey, Dylan. Give me a sec to go to a quiet place. The assholes here are noisy.”

Dylan knew about North and the others because he’d sometimes helped them before Beck had come on board. He’d never wanted to move in, though, saying he was too used to the forest in Gillham. North understood it. He probably wouldn’t have been there if he’d had a choice. Well, he did have a choice—it wasn’t like the council held him prisoner—but he knew what he was, and he knew the council needed him. Dylan was just a normal shifter.

North quickly climbed the stairs up to his room, Milo right behind him. He was surprised to see Milo since he was one of the few in the house who were allowed to work—even though he couldn’t leave the house, either, of course. He wasn’t going to protest, though. The more time he spent with Milo, the better he felt.

“Talk to me,” he told Dylan as soon as he walked into his bedroom.

“I found them.”

North froze. That wasn’t what he’d expected. “Who? My...”

“Not your immediate family, no. I’m sorry. But I found a man and a woman. Alban and Liz.”

Those names had been burned into North’s heart. The news that they were alive made his knees weak. He needed to sit down, so he lowered himself onto his mattress. “You really found them?” he asked, his voice barely more than a croak.

“I did. They’re actually in Wyoming, not far from where you are. They’re not part of the Gillham pack, but they live in a town nearby that’s friendly to shifters.”

“What...”

“I’ll email you their details, okay? I’ll continue looking for other survivors, but you know how this works, so don’t get your hopes up.”

“Of course not. I—this is already so much.” And it had taken Dylan almost two years to find Liz and Alban.

North was still in a daze when he hung up. He hadn’t even realized that Milo was crouching in front of him, a frown on his face. “What happened?” he asked as soon as the phone was away from North’s ear.

They hadn’t talked about their families, not yet.
